With the social media market growing by about 34.1% in the next five years, platforms such as Pinterest and Instagram have taken the industry by storm. The concept behind the platform is extremely simple. Users “Save” images to virtual “boards” according to a theme or purpose. Each image takes you to the original web page where it was discovered. Users of the platform are able to collaborate on boards with others and “like” and “repin” boards that creators have developed. Pinterest’s subscriber base is almost 80% female and they have uniquely targeted a red-hot demographic: twenty- and thirty- year women. While Pinterest has always had a share of the social media market, many B2C retailers, such as Whole Foods and Nordstrom, are using the platform to roll out retail clothing and recipes.
