Open your Slack messenger, click the dropdown menu on your Slack account, and click the preferences option. This will take you to a new window of options.
Here, you can choose when you would like to receive notifications in Slack. You can choose to be notified for every new message, or when you receive direct messages, mentions & keywords, or never receive any notifications. If you choose not to receive notifications, you will still receive the badgers indicating that you have unread messages. You can also create different preferences for your mobile devices.
If you’re worried about missing any important conversations in group chats, but you easily get distracted, adding specific keywords might be beneficial. If you’re working on a select few projects in a large office, you may want to include keywords that relate to those projects. This will eliminate distracting notifications, the need to wade through group conversations, or missing something important.
The notification settings on Slack can always be updated, and keep in mind that when you’ve set your status to “Do Not Disturb” because you’re in a meeting or out of the office, you will not receive any notifications until it’s been turned off. This can automatically set up during specific hours of the day, such as 10:00 pm to 8:00 am when you’re home and off the clock. Further down on the preference page, you have the option to send notifications to your mobile device if you’ve been inactive on your desktop for a customized amount of time.
In most offices or departments, there are going to be Slack channels that are more relevant to your specific job title than others. Here, you can choose channel-specific notifications.
