We’re Disconnected in the Modern Workplace – Here’s How to Fix It

A Workforce On the Move

It won’t come as a shock to anyone reading this that the coronavirus pandemic changed the culture of work indefinitely. One day in March of 2020, our conference rooms became our living rooms. Our homes became our offices. But then our homes changed too!

According to USPS data, over 15.9 million people moved during the coronavirus pandemic. We officially became a workforce on the move and this physical movement required a cultural shift as well. This has also had an impact on communication between team members.

Meeting The Moment

With the rise of distributed teams, a clear and concise communication is more important than ever. Since the start of the pandemic, hundreds of apps have cropped up to help connect the professional diaspora from afar–  and we’ve embraced them all.

And I do mean all of them.

The average SaaS company uses over 100 different applications to communicate. The sheer number of communication apps adopted by SaaS companies in recent months has managed to exacerbate the problem it was attempting to solve.

Now, we have people in sales using one tool and people who work in support using something else entirely, effectively harpooning any attempts to convey important messaging in a clear and concise manner.

In short, our attempts to stay connected have disconnected us even more.

Messaging Matters

In any business, communication is key. Whether you are attempting to distribute information about an internal change or something more specific that applies to cross-functional teams; your messaging is more likely to be lost if it’s being conveyed through channel after channel.

Aside from the challenge of tailoring your message to individual platforms, there is the risk of the message being distorted. Any children’s game of “telephone” is a perfect example of what can go wrong when a message is passed on an individual basis.

So if we can’t get together all at once, how are we going to make sure our message gets across?

The Solution

Now that we’ve moved on – in a very literal sense–  from the days of packing in a conference room for an update meeting, there needs to be a way to get that same messaging out to a large group of individuals spanning the globe.

Asynchronous Communication is the answer.

Under the Async model you can record a short video that conveys your message exactly as intended and share it with an infinite number of people, no matter where they are.

Better still, the people that need to hear your message can do so at their own convenience giving them the added benefit of a more flexible workday.

With Async you have managed to:

  1. Communicate Your Message Clearly
With the use of video there is no chance the message will lose its meaning along the way.
  2. Win Back Your Time
The time you would have spent tailoring your message to separate platforms disappears, leaving you with the time back on your calendar.
  3. Win Back The Time of Your Peers
The people on the receiving end of the message can get all the information they need in one burst with no need to worry about passing it on. This frees up their time as well.

Reconnect the Disconnected

The world of work has changed and we are changing with it. I believe that utilizing asynchronous communication is the most effective way to keep the lines of communication flowing while staying on message.
